The ban followed Trump <a href=”https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-coronavirus-pandemic-david-letterman-reality-tv-8551982a4c79c8f3825834ef86586d5b” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>firing off</a> over 57,000 tweets, frequently using the platform throughout his time in office to spread xenophobia, throw insults, and amplify false claims of voter fraud, which prompted Twitter warnings on the posts starting in May. </p> <iframe src=”https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?creatorScreenName=commondreams&creatorUserId=14296273&dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-2&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1347698551200034817&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2F2021%2F01%2F09%2Fbig-tech-further-mutes-president-far-right-megaphone-demands-trump-removal-swell&siteScreenName=commondreams&siteUserId=14296273&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px” style=”position: static; visibility: visible; width: 550px; height: 379px; flex-grow: 1;” title=”Twitter Tweet”></iframe> <p>@TeamTrump was subsequently suspended on Friday after that account posted a series of tweets attributed to the president, since “using another account to try to evade a suspension is against our rules,” Twitter said. </p><p><img alt=”@TeamTrump suspended” src=”https://www.commondreams.org/sites/default/files/users/user21/teamtrump-suspended.jpg.png”/>Just ahead of that account’s suspension, it “had pointed its 2.3 million followers to its account on Parler,” <em>Reuters</em> <a href=”https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-twitter-removal/twitter-deletes-new-trump-tweets-on-potus-suspends-campaign-account-idUSKBN29E02H” target=”_blank”>reported</a>.</p><p>The<a href=”https://www.axios.com/platforms-social-media-ban-restrict-trump-d9e44f3c-8366-4ba9-a8a1-7f3114f920f1.html” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”> swelling list</a> of suspended Trump-affiliated accounts includes Facebook, with that company blocking the president from posting on his account for at least two weeks. “We believe the risks of allowing the president to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg. </p><p>Digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation says the companies are justified in the bans, calling the moves “a simple exercise of [the platforms’] rights, under the First Amendment and Section 230, to curate their sites.”</p><p>”Nevertheless,” EFF legal director Corynne McSherry <a href=”https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/01/eff-response-social-media-companies-decision-block-president-trumps-accounts” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>wrote</a> Thursday, “we are always concerned when platforms take on the role of censors, which is why we continue to call on them to apply a <a href=”https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/11/eff-court-remedy-bad-content-moderation-isnt-give-government-more-power-control” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>human rights framework</a> to those decisions.” She urged the platforms to be “more transparent and consistent in how they apply their rules—and we call on policymakers to find ways to foster competition so that users have numerous editorial options and policies from which to choose.”</p><p>EFF’s call came as questions swirled about how the extremist mob was able to wreak the havoc they did, especially given indications the violence would unfold. As <em>ProPublica</em> <a href=”https://www.propublica.org/article/capitol-rioters-planned-for-weeks-in-plain-sight-the-police-werent-ready” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>reported</a> Thursday, “warnings of Wednesday’s assault on the Capitol were everywhere” on social media, including Parler.</p><p>Detailing those warnings, far-right extremism researcher Alex Newhouse <a href=”https://www.commondreams.org/views/2021/01/09/far-right-activists-social-media-telegraphed-violence-weeks-advance-attack-us” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>wrote</a> Friday at <em>The Conversation: </em></p> <blockquote>Although posts on Facebook and Twitter hinted that more than just protests were possible, nowhere was the coming violence as obvious as on Parler. The site, which <a href=”https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/11/technology/parler-rumble-newsmax.html” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>has attracted millions of new conservative users in the past year</a>, has positioned itself as <a href=”https://theconversation.com/parler-is-bringing-together-mainstream-conservatives-anti-semites-and-white-supremacists-as-the-social-media-platform-attracts-millions-of-trump-supporters-150439″ rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>a bastion for right-wing conspiracy theories and organizing efforts</a>. From my research, hundreds of Parler users expressed their sincere belief, and even desire, that the demonstrations would spark a physical battle, revolution or civil war.<br/></blockquote> <blockquote>We are ready to fight back and we want blood,” a Parler post from Dec. 28 declared. “The president need to do some thing if Jan. 6 is the day then we are ready.” Another user stated, “January 6 will either be our saving grace or we will have another civil war that should end very quickly!! Either way Trump will be our POTUS!! Anything less is unacceptable!!”<br/>Using tools that allow me to monitor large-scale social media data, I found evidence that right-wing activists had been explicit and open with their intentions for the Jan. 6 demonstrations since at least mid-December.<br/></blockquote> <p>The heightened scrutiny of Parler joins <a href=”https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/01/07/growing-list-lawmakers-and-groups-support-impeaching-trump-or-invoking-25th%20″ rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>growing calls</a> for Trump’s removal, either through impeachment or the 25th Amendment, with the demands coming from advocacy groups as well as a growing list of lawmakers.</p><p>A group of House Democrats <a href=”https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/politics/trump-article-of-impeachment-draft/index.html” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>plans</a> on introducing an article of impeachment against Trump on Monday for “willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.”</p><p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href=”https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/politics/house-democrats-impeachment-plans/index.html” rel=”noopener noreferrer” target=”_blank”>says</a> the House will act on the measure next week of the president doesn’t resign first.</p>
